I have always been fascinated by the word coexistence, meaning the existence of more than one thing at the same time in the same place. I have chosen to show this fascination through my artwork, in an attempt to show it’s important presence. My artwork explores the relationships between man, nature, and self in an attempt to show the unavoidable coexistence of our surroundings and ideas: the people we meet, the grass we walk across, and the concepts we cannot shake are infinite and inescapable, and that is a beautiful thing.
The four relationships I have chosen to explore are man-man, man-self, nature-nature, and man-nature. In man-man, I will divulge into what brings humans together or apart, such as love, hate, and other common grounds. One painting I have done already falling under this category is titled Dear after the song by Taylor Swift that inspired me called Dear John. The painting is a symbolic representation of a girl moving on when she otherwise would’ve been brought down. Though the figures are far from human-like, the man-man representation stands. In man-self, I will explore the emotional struggles and occurrences that create a character, allowing thus for one to develop relationships outside of one’s own mind. Such paintings will capture self-loathing, acceptance, and inspiration, for example. In nature-nature, I will delve into the coexistence and dependency that most living things have for one another. In a painting I have already completed under this category, swirling, spiraling water envelopes the trunk of a tree, thus giving it life and allowing it to produce splattering colors representing this life. In man-nature, I will interpret the destructive patterns of man towards the earth, as well as all that man has done for the earth that has been forgotten.
I have found that my two favorite mediums are acrylic paint and photography. Acrylic paint allows me to use bright colors that mix and combine well with other colors while using as minimum detail or as much detail as I would like. Photography allows me to capture in the moment and spontaneous, candid photographs when I spot an opportunity, but allows gives me the freedom to plan and create, just as I would do with any other medium. Combining the two mediums into a portfolio gives me the free range to capture any idea I have, literal or metaphorical.
The reason I chose this theme is the show the importance and inescapable necessity of coexistence. It is impossible for you or me or anything in this world to exist without someone or something else. I wanted to personify ideas and nonphysical emotions that are so important to these relationships in a way that writing or dance or music or any other form of expression could not.
The portfolio I am continuing to build will show complications and implications of relationships and coexistence in an attempt to show the necessity of acceptance and love because without it, you are not only alone, but you are nothing.
